If you've ever eaten a Dorito, then you know how much they pack on weight. The same goes for Doritos; when it comes to snacks and treats for kids, parents often wonder if they're packing enough "dieter" calories to make their children fat. After all, no snack can make you lose weight without some combination of fruits, vegetables, fiber, protein and fat. It doesn't take very long for a child to accumulate significant amounts of fat from all of their food.

So, how can a child who's trying to lose weight to avoid putting all of that extra fat into his or her body? The key is understanding how to choose the right kind of food for his or her specific needs and tastes. If you know which foods to avoid, and you make the right choices, then it's easy to help your child shed some pounds.

For kids, one of the biggest culprits for high-fat content is chocolate. While adults may enjoy the occasional bit of chocolate, children need healthier alternatives if they're going to avoid gaining weight from chocolates. Instead of grabbing a bag of Mountain Dews or chocolate chip cookies, find some healthier alternatives, such as Ghiradelli chocolate bars or Laffy Taffys.

This may sound strange, but fruit snacks are also loaded with sugar and fat. Again, you don't want to give your kids snacks that are going to add to their weight problem. Instead, find healthy snacks like grapes, bananas, pretzels, or even a piece of whole-wheat crackers. These are healthy snacks that your kids will likely eat all on their own, and they won't feel guilty about it because they are not thinking about how much fat is in the snack. Fruit also has plenty of fiber to help carry extra calories around without adding any fat.

If you're trying to limit calories in a big bag of Doritos, be aware that many snack chips contain large amounts of salt. If your child eats a bag of potato chips, he or she will be consuming a lot of sodium. Even more important is that many teens and kids count these snacks as an actual meal, meaning that they get a larger amount of calories at the same time. Counting calories can be tricky, but it is something that every child should do. To help children stay on track, talk to them about what they put into their bodies, and about what snacks they should count among their favorites.

Counting calories doesn't have to be difficult for parents to do. If you pick a healthy snack for your children like grapes or pretzels, then tell your child what the snack is, and why it is better than others. You can also talk to them about portion sizes, so your kids know how much food they should eat at each mealtime. When you give your kids a healthy snack like one of these, you are helping them develop healthier eating habits that will help them grow up to be healthier and fitter people, even if they don't realize it at first.
